Pacific Islands Forum faces tensions over Taiwan and maritime security

As the 55th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) approaches in Palau, scheduled for August 30 to September 4, geopolitical tensions regarding Taiwan and maritime security are intensifying. China has urged the PIF secretariat to adhere to the ‘One China’ principle, following reports that Taiwan may participate in the upcoming annual leaders' meeting. Beijing noted that Taiwan was excluded from the previous meeting in the Solomon Islands following Chinese protests.

Separately, analysts warn that growing Chinese naval, coast guard, and research vessel activity east of Taiwan poses potential risks to the Blue Pacific. This maritime activity, occurring in the waters that serve as a gateway to Micronesia and Melanesia, could impact shipping routes, supply chains, and maritime security within the exclusive economic zones of Pacific Island nations.
