Pacific Islands Forum convenes in Palau to advance regional priorities

The 55th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting has convened in Koror, Palau, under the theme ‘Building Economies: Life. Action. Unity’. The summit focuses on advancing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, addressing critical regional issues including digital governance, renewable energy, climate resilience, and ocean priorities.

During the meeting, the Solomon Islands officially handed over the PIF chairmanship to Palau. Solomon Islands officials also called for structural reforms to the Forum, urging leaders to transform regional communiqués into concrete actions and to separate the Leaders Meeting from the Dialogue Partners process to protect the Forum's integrity.

The Pacific Smaller Island States (SIS) grouping, now chaired by Palau, has identified four priority areas: securing reliable air and sea transport, advancing fisheries development, strengthening regional procurement, and improving access to climate finance. Meanwhile, bilateral engagements continue, such as Japan reaffirming its partnership with the Solomon Islands and India expressing its commitment to the Blue Pacific Continent.

Despite the absence of several leaders, the Forum Secretariat maintains that the meeting will successfully achieve its intended outcomes. The summit takes place amidst heightened geopolitical interest in the region, with leaders emphasizing that Pacific nations must set their own regional agenda.
