Authorities from Kiribati, Palau, and Papua New Guinea participated in a large-scale regional maritime surveillance operation known as Operation Island Chief 2026 (OPIC26). Coordinated by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) between August 3 and August 14, the operation covered approximately 27.5 million square kilometers of Pacific waters.

During the two-week period, officials monitored more than 3,000 fishing vessels and conducted 133 onboard inspections. The operation resulted in the detention or seizure of four vessels for alleged illegal fishing, licensing violations, or other maritime infractions. These vessels included ships flagged to China and Indonesia.

Additionally, the FFA identified 16 vessels of interest that require further investigation due to potential links to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing or other maritime crimes. The operation aimed to bolster the capacity of small Pacific island nations to monitor their vast maritime jurisdictions.
