Pacific Media Summit convenes in Fiji to address journalism survival

The 8th Pacific Media Summit has commenced in Savusavu, Fiji, bringing together regional journalists, researchers, and media leaders to address the future of journalism in the Pacific. Organized by the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) and hosted by the Fijian Media Association (FMA), the summit focuses on the theme, ‘Reaching the Remote: Media and Digital Innovation for a Connected Blue Pacific.’

Discussions aim to tackle critical issues including press freedom, newsroom sustainability, artificial intelligence, anti-corruption, and climate change reporting. Stanley Simpson, general secretary of the FMA, noted that media organizations are facing significant pressures from misinformation, disinformation, rapid technological shifts, and declining traditional advertising revenues.

The summit seeks to explore how newsrooms can adapt to technological advancements and digital inclusion while maintaining the core principles of independent journalism. The choice of Savusavu as a venue was intended to bring these high-level discussions closer to communities directly experiencing these regional challenges.
