Pacific nations face fuel and climate crises

Pacific island nations are facing a compounding crisis as rising fuel costs threaten food, water, and healthcare security. The United Nations warns that fuel shocks in the Pacific often arrive later and persist longer than in other regions, creating prolonged threats to essential services. In Kiribati, the reliance on imported fuel and irregular shipping makes communities highly vulnerable to supply disruptions.

To mitigate these risks, ChildFund New Zealand, supported by the Australian government, is launching a project to assist approximately 4,000 people across Kiribati. The initiative focuses on practical resilience, including improved water capture and storage, portable desalination units, and training local technicians to maintain water systems.

Simultaneously, the need for robust climate finance is being highlighted as these nations face both energy shocks and the threat of an El Niño period. Analysis from Oxfam suggests that current climate finance reporting by developed nations may be overstated. Critics argue that existing accounting methodologies, such as those used by the OECD, often count loans at full face value and include projects with only secondary climate benefits, failing to reflect the actual net assistance delivered to developing countries.
