Pacific Northwest transit agencies implement technology and infrastructure upgrades

Public transit agencies in the Pacific Northwest are implementing infrastructure and technology upgrades. In Washington State, Sound Transit is preparing to pilot the Boleto ticketing system on its Link Light Rail network. The project, involving an initial investment of approximately $6 million, aims to transition toward contactless, digital payments via smartphones and credit cards. The pilot will test ticketless fare collection at 14 stations, including major hubs like Northgate, Capitol Hill, and SeaTac/Airport, with implementation phases targeted for 2027.

In Oregon, TriMet has completed the Westside MAX Improvements project in Washington County. The project involved upgrading three rail crossings at Southwest Merlo Road, Southwest 170th Avenue, and West Baseline Road to improve drainage and repair rail and street surfaces. Following this completion, TriMet plans to begin overhauls at the Beaverton and Oregon City Transit Centers this fall.
