Pacific Ocean sees intense tropical activity with multiple hurricanes
The Pacific Ocean is experiencing an exceptionally active tropical cyclone season, with multiple systems currently under observation. NASA satellite imagery has captured four active cyclones simultaneously, including Hurricane Polo near the Baja California peninsula and Hurricane Nolo near Hawaii.
Hurricane Polo recently underwent explosive intensification, reaching Category 5 strength due to unusually warm ocean temperatures. After making landfall in Baja California Sur and later near Guaymas, Mexico, the system caused concerns regarding high winds, storm surges, and flooding. Meteorologists note that while some social media reports suggested a ‘Category 6’ due to Polo’s extreme wind speeds, the official Saffir-Simpson scale remains limited to five categories.
Other active systems include Hurricane Rachel, which has been strengthening south of Baja California Sur with sustained winds of 165 km/h, and Tropical Storm Nolo, which is approaching Hawaii. Additionally, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring a new area of low pressure south of Mexico that has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next week.
