Pacific Ocean El Niño phenomenon may impact Lithuanian weather
The El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean is expected to influence weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere, including potential impacts on Lithuania. During El Niño, surface waters in the equatorial Pacific become warmer than usual, altering atmospheric circulation, wind currents, and pressure fields.
While El Niño does not directly dictate specific daily weather in cities like Vilnius or Kaunas, it affects large-scale atmospheric movements. For Europe and the Baltic region, the primary concern is how these changes influence Atlantic cyclones. If cyclones frequently pass through Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region, the winter may be characterized by wetter, windier, and milder conditions, resembling a long, late autumn. Conversely, high-pressure systems over Northern Europe could block these cyclones, leading to different weather outcomes.
