Pacific Ocean tectonic fragmentation identified near Canada

Scientists have identified a slow process of tectonic fragmentation occurring several kilometers beneath the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Canada. Research published in the journal Science Advances indicates that the Cascadia tectonic system is gradually breaking into smaller parts.

The study focused on the Northwest Pacific region, where the Juan de Fuca and Explorer oceanic plates meet the North American Plate. Researchers observed that a subduction zone in this area is gradually ceasing to function. This transformation is driven by the interaction between oceanic ridges and the subduction zone; as the oceanic ridge approaches the deep-sea trench, the newly formed lithosphere—which is younger, warmer, and has greater buoyancy—alters the geometry of the tectonic plate.

Experts emphasize that this is not a sudden crustal rupture or an event that will cause visible changes to the planet's surface in the near future. Instead, it is a long-term geological transformation that will unfold over millions of years, documenting the continuous movement and evolution of the Earth's crust.
