Pacific Ring of Fire sees surge in seismic activity

The Pacific Ring of Fire has experienced intense seismic activity, with over 120 earthquakes measuring at least magnitude 4.5 reported within a seven-day period. This horseshoe-shaped region, which accounts for nearly 90% of the world's earthquakes, continues to show high levels of volatility due to its location along tectonic plate boundaries.

On Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers. While a magnitude 6.3 earthquake also occurred in the same area last week, the USGS reported no immediate risk of material damage or casualties from the most recent tremor, and no tsunami warning was issued. Vanuatu remains highly vulnerable to such events, having suffered a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in December 2024 that resulted in multiple fatalities.

In addition to the activity in the South Pacific, Panama recorded significant seismic events in October, including earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.6 magnitude, followed by dozens of aftershocks.
