Pacific seasonal workers report poor conditions and wage issues
Workers participating in Australia’s Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) and New Zealand’s Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) schemes have reported poor living conditions and unfair financial practices. During a Pacific Islands Council of Trade Unions workshop in Vanuatu, laborers raised concerns regarding overcrowding, inadequate bathroom facilities, and restrictions on cooking traditional foods.
Specific allegations include workers being charged for bedding and utensils, as well as unexplained salary deductions. Some female workers reported being limited to very short shower times. Union representatives noted that many workers from remote communities struggle to understand employment documents, highlighting a need for union involvement prior to overseas deployment.
