El Niño intensifies as multiple Pacific storms emerge
A powerful El Niño event is driving extreme weather across the Pacific, characterized by a rare simultaneous occurrence of multiple tropical systems. The World Meteorological Organization warns that El Niño is intensifying and could become a very strong phenomenon, with potential impacts on global precipitation and temperature patterns lasting into 2027. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates a 69% probability that this specific El Niño event will be the most intense ever recorded.
In the Pacific, multiple storms are active: Hurricane Lowell has intensified into a Category 5 storm, while Hurricane Karina is a Category 4 system. Both are expected to pass near Hawaii, potentially causing dangerous surf conditions. Additionally, Tropical Storm Marie is strengthening and is projected to become a hurricane, bringing heavy rainfall and high winds to the western coast of Mexico, including Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán. In Baja California Sur, heavy rains have already led to the suspension of classes in Los Cabos and Ciudad Constitución and have caused flooding in some medical facilities.
In South America, meteorologists in Chile suggest that El Niño conditions may lead to above-normal precipitation levels during September.
