Pacific tourism sector shows revenue growth despite connectivity hurdles
A new joint report by Pacific Trade Invest Australia and the Pacific Tourism Organisation reveals that nearly half of Pacific tourism operators reported revenue growth over the past year, outperforming the broader Pacific export sector.
Despite this growth, the industry faces significant challenges. Limited international air connectivity was identified by 44% of operators as the leading barrier to expansion, followed by concerns regarding operating costs and financing. Additionally, 50% of operators cited a need for assistance with business marketing, while 44% requested better destination marketing for the Pacific Islands.
To address these issues, Pacific Trade Invest Australia and the Pacific Tourism Organisation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration. The report also noted a high level of digital integration, with 95% of operators utilizing online sales channels, primarily through social media.
In related regional developments, Tourism Fiji announced an expanding lineup of cruise operators and small-ship expeditions scheduled for 2027. Companies including Norwegian Cruise Line, Silversea, and National Geographic Expeditions are planning itineraries that utilize Fiji as a gateway to the wider South Pacific, including destinations such as Tahiti and Bora Bora.
