San Diego State enters Pac-12 era as Poinsettia Bowl returns

San Diego State University is navigating a significant transition as it enters its inaugural season as a member of the rebuilt Pac-12 Conference. The athletic department expects the move to provide increased national visibility, stronger recruiting opportunities, and enhanced television exposure through new partnerships with The CW and USA Network.

In football, the realignment has brought new postseason possibilities to San Diego. The Poinsettia Bowl is returning to Snapdragon Stadium on December 23, 2026, following a nine-year hiatus. The game will feature a Pac-12 team against a Power 4 opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, or Big 12. Additionally, the Holiday Bowl is scheduled to be held at the same stadium on December 28.

Other collegiate sports programs in the region are also active. The San Diego State volleyball team is beginning its 2026 campaign with a three-match tournament in the Pacific Northwest. In women's soccer, the University of the Pacific is scheduled for road matches against San Diego State and UC San Diego, while Cal State Fullerton recently played to a 2-2 draw against San Jose State. Santa Clara University is also commencing its women's volleyball season.
