Indonesia's Social Ministry oversees boarding school abuse response
The Ministry of Social Welfare (Kemensos) is coordinating a comprehensive recovery program for victims of sexual abuse at the Ndolo Kusumo boarding school in Pati, Central Java. Minister Saifullah Yusuf pledged protection, rehabilitation and continued education for the affected students, and announced a mapping of victims' families to tailor assistance.
Police have transferred the alleged perpetrator, a 51‑year‑old caretaker, to the Central Java regional detention centre for security reasons as investigations continue. Legal advocates stress the need for thorough evidence gathering and witness testimony.
In a related case in Jepara, a caretaker of the Al Anwar boarding school, Imam Abi Jamroh, was named a suspect in sexual violence against female students. Following his arrest, he resigned from his position as Deputy Chairman of the PWNU (Nahdlatul Ulama) Central Java board, a move confirmed by the organization’s religious head.
Both incidents highlight intensified governmental and community efforts to address sexual misconduct in religious educational institutions across Indonesia.
