Packaging industry faces regulatory shifts and technological updates

The packaging and food processing sectors are undergoing significant shifts driven by regulation, automation, and sustainability. In Germany, new EU-aligned rules against greenwashing have taken effect, prohibiting vague environmental claims like ‘eco-friendly’ without verifiable proof. This shift encourages companies to focus on measurable attributes, such as material reduction, which consumers increasingly value over labels.

In response to sustainability trends, Lidl Germany released its fifth sustainability report, noting a 14.5 percent reduction in operational emissions and expanded electric vehicle infrastructure. Similarly, Ecocool has introduced a jute-based insulated packaging solution for the pharmaceutical industry, designed to maintain temperature-sensitive products using biodegradable materials.

Technological advancements are also surfacing, such as Provisur’s new automated ‘Press-to-Pack’ solution. This system integrates meat processing with flexible, electromagnetic transport units to improve efficiency in handling varying portion sizes and batch types.

Conversely, the industry faces economic challenges. Austrian packaging manufacturer Steirerpack GmbH has entered restructuring proceedings due to a market crisis in the corrugated cardboard industry, rising costs, and liquidity issues, leading to planned job reductions.
