Packaging industry shifts toward sustainability and accessibility in Italy

The packaging sector in Italy is undergoing significant transformations driven by new regulations, technological innovation, and a focus on social inclusion.

In response to the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the Italian market is facing stricter technical standards to eliminate loopholes that previously allowed traditional plastic single-use items to be marketed as reusable. By April 21, 2027, the retail (GDO) and HoReCa sectors must align with these community standards, which mandate specific engineering criteria for recyclability and reuseability.

Technological advancements are also reshaping the industry. Smipack S.p.A. is introducing a new generation of packaging machinery, including the FW, BP, XP, and WPS series, which emphasize improved ergonomics, accessibility, and efficiency. These updates will be showcased at the Bevertech trade fair in Milan.

Additionally, the industry is addressing social impact through inclusive design. The Fondazione Carta Etica del Packaging recently hosted an event at Barilla’s headquarters in Parma to discuss how packaging can promote autonomy for individuals with varying physical and cognitive abilities. The discussion focused on the 'Design for All' principle, examining how shapes, openings, and information layouts can reduce barriers for diverse consumer groups.
