Packaging innovators advance fiber-based and sustainable food solutions

Packaging companies are advancing fiber-based and sustainable solutions to meet evolving global regulations and consumer needs.

At PACK EXPO International 2026, Michelman, in collaboration with UPM Specialty Materials and BOBST, will present new paper-based flexible packaging structures and next-generation coatings. These technologies aim to support recyclability and compostability while meeting performance requirements for paper cup applications. Michelman’s Nuvita® Life series offers bio-based, plastic-free, and food-contact compliant coatings designed to address regulations such as California’s SB 54 and the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive.

In a separate application of material science, ProAmpac has developed a custom fiber-based tray for Circle K’s Flamin’ Hot® Boneless Chicken Wings, created in partnership with PepsiCo/Frito-Lay. The packaging is engineered to address heat retention, moisture loss, and grease resistance, helping to maintain food quality and extend hot hold times for retail consumers.
