PACMA demands investigation into Moaña octopus breeding project

The Animalist Party with the Environment (PACMA) has called on the Xunta de Galicia to conduct an exhaustive investigation into an octopus breeding and experimentation project in Moaña. The project, promoted by Octolarvae (a subsidiary of Grupo Profand), aims to develop a scalable industrial production system for juvenile octopuses within approximately five years.

PACMA has warned of potential legal action to halt the project, citing significant environmental, sanitary, and animal welfare risks. Technical documentation indicates high mortality rates, with 50% to 80% of larvae dying before reaching the juvenile stage, and losses exceeding 85% during the settlement phase. The project also involves the captive breeding of other species, such as crabs and lobsters, to serve as live feed.

Additionally, the party highlighted biological risks to nearby protected areas, including the Enseada de San Simón, due to the potential presence of pathogens or harmful substances in discharges.
