Paco Núñez demands 2031 extension of Water Directive for Castilla‑La Mancha

Regional PP leader Paco Núñez has called for the EU Water Framework Directive’s implementation deadline to be pushed from December 2027 to 2031. He argues the current timetable risks the closure of about 70 % of the roughly 7,000 irrigation wells that serve vineyards and other crops in Castilla‑La Mancha, jeopardising thousands of hectares of farmland.

Núñez says extending the deadline would allow time to develop water‑reuse projects, build new treatment facilities and modernise irrigation systems, balancing environmental sustainability with the agricultural economy. He criticised the regional government of Emiliano García‑Page for failing to plan and invest in the necessary infrastructure, and pledged that a PP‑led administration would act from day one to protect water supplies for farmers and livestock.
