Paco Núñez urges EU to extend water directive deadline to 2032

Paco Núñez, president of the Popular Party in Castilla‑La Mancha, travelled to Strasbourg to meet EU Commissioner for Environment, Resilience, Water and Circular Economy Jessika Roswall. He handed over the Regional Water Pact, outlining the region’s position on water management, and urged the European Commission to extend the deadline of the EU Water Framework Directive to 2032. Núñez warned that without an extension, wells in areas such as La Mancha and the Alto Guadiana could be forced to close, creating an "economic and social drama" that would affect thousands of farms, jobs and dozens of municipalities.

He criticized the current regional socialist administration for not fulfilling the pact and pledged that, if the Popular Party assumes regional power, it will launch a water‑investment plan to recover and reinvest EU funds in irrigation, water purification and reuse infrastructure. Roswall said she would take note of the proposals and study the party’s demands.
