PacWave South wave energy testing site opens off Oregon

The PacWave South wave energy testing site has officially opened off the coast of Oregon, marking a significant development for the marine energy industry in the continental United States. Developed by Oregon State University, the facility allows companies to test technologies designed to generate electricity from ocean waves and deliver power to the local grid.

The project secured federal approval following a “go/no-go” review by the Department of Energy, a process required after the return of the Trump administration in 2025. While the administration has implemented policies that have slowed other clean energy sectors, such as offshore wind, officials have expressed interest in the potential of ocean wave energy.

Despite the facility being connected to the grid, it has not yet generated electricity because wave energy devices have not yet arrived at the site, with developers reportedly facing delays in federal funding. The Department of Energy has invested approximately $150 million into the siting and construction of the facility since 2016.
