Padel: History, gameplay, and injury prevention

Padel is an international racket sport characterized by fast-paced, social doubles matches played on enclosed 20 x 10 meter courts. The sport utilizes glass walls, allowing the ball to rebound during play. Its origins date back to 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico, where Enrique Corcuera adapted a home court area to include surrounding walls. The sport later expanded to Spain through Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, who introduced it to the Marbella Club in the 1970s.

Due to the explosive nature of the game, which involves repetitive overhead movements such as smashes, bandejas, and volleys, shoulder injuries are common among players. Frequent issues include rotator cuff tendinitis and impingement syndrome, often caused by improper technique, lack of physical preparation, or excessive play. Maintaining stability and strength in the shoulder joint is essential to prevent long-term rehabilitation needs.
