Paderborn prosecutor declines criminal proceedings in infant death case

The public prosecutor's office in Paderborn has decided not to initiate criminal proceedings against nursing or cleaning staff following the death of a premature infant at the St. Louise children's clinic. The decision comes after investigations into a severe sepsis outbreak on the neonatal intensive care unit in August.

Two infants contracted sepsis caused by Enterobacter bacteria; one died and the other has since recovered. Investigations by the health department and forensic experts revealed that the infants were infected with different strains of the bacteria, ruling out transmission between the two babies. While the exact source of the bacteria entering the clinic remains unclear, authorities noted that it is possible visitors may have introduced the germs to the ward.

A death investigation remains ongoing to determine the exact cause of death, though preliminary forensic assessments suggest the intestinal bacteria was the cause.
