Padiș–Ic Ponor road modernization reaches 55% completion
Modernization works on the DJ 763 county road, specifically the section connecting Padiș and Ic Ponor between Bihor and Cluj counties, have reached 55% completion. Mircea Mălan, President of the Bihor County Council, conducted a site visit on October 7 to inspect the progress.
The nearly 10-kilometer mountain stretch has been closed to traffic since July 10, 2026, to ensure safety during rock removal and reinforcement operations. Due to the difficult terrain, workers have had to carve through rock and build support structures for every meter of the road. To date, 3,900 meters of concrete retaining walls have been constructed to prevent landslides on the valley side.
Construction crews have removed rocks using heavy machinery instead of explosives. Current efforts focus on stabilizing slopes to prevent falling debris. Additionally, 37 water culverts and collection chambers have been installed to manage rainwater and snowmelt. The roadbed has been excavated and filled with stone, with the first compacted crushed stone foundation layer already in place. Work on the second foundation layer is scheduled to begin next week.
