Padova hospital reports rare twin birth from two separate uteri

A 24-year-old woman, Manar Ismaili, has given birth to twins—a boy and a girl—at the Azienda Ospedale-Università di Padova in Italy. The birth is considered an extremely rare medical phenomenon because the twins developed in two distinct uteri, a condition known as uterus didelphys.

Medical staff identified the anatomical condition early in the pregnancy. Due to the high risks associated with such a gestation, the woman received specialized monitoring from the gynecology and obstetrics department, led by Dr. Paola Veronese, starting from the sixteenth week.

The twins were delivered via cesarean section at the 30th week of gestation. The boy weighed 1,930 grams and the girl weighed 1,590 grams. Both infants were reported to be in good health and received care in the Neonatology department. According to medical literature cited by the healthcare facility, there are only six documented successful cases of this nature worldwide.
