Data from Confesercenti reveals a significant decline in the retail sector in the province of Padova between 2019 and 2025. The number of retail businesses has dropped from 10,063 to 8,597, representing a 14.6% contraction. This decline is estimated to have resulted in a loss of approximately 219.9 million euros in local wealth.

In the municipality of Padova specifically, retail businesses decreased from 2,871 to 2,447, a 14.8% reduction, causing an estimated loss of 63.6 million euros to the local economy. This trend is attributed to commercial desertification and the rise of international e-commerce platforms.
