Paducah Energy Hub Redevelopment Promises $100 B Investment and Thousands of Jobs

The U.S. Department of Energy announced that the former Paducah nuclear enrichment site in Kentucky will be redeveloped into a large AI data center, branded the Paducah American Energy Hub. The plan involves more than $100 billion in private investment and will create about 8,000 construction jobs and 600 permanent positions.

State and federal officials weighed in. U.S. Rep. Andy Barr called the project "historic," while Rep. James Comer praised the job creation. State Sen. Danny Carroll highlighted the potential for regional economic growth and surplus energy generation. Governor Andy Beshear said he has not been briefed and raised questions about power supply, environmental impact, and tax benefits.

The hub will include a two‑gigawatt natural‑gas power plant that should generate excess electricity for the local grid. Partners include Brookfield, NextEra Energy, Big Rivers Electric Power Corporation, Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative and Paducah Power System. The Trump administration is pursuing similar conversions of former federal nuclear sites for AI data centers in Ohio, South Carolina and Nevada, drawing criticism from environmental groups and local communities.
