Padula establishes annual “Joe Petrosino Day” to honor detective

The municipal administration of Padula, led by Mayor Michela Cimino, formally created an official “Joe Petrosino Day”. The annual observance will take place each 30 August, the birthdate of Giuseppe “Joe Petrosino”, the Padula‑born detective who built a pioneering career in the New York Police Department and became a key figure in early anti‑mafia investigations. Petrosino, born in Padula in 1860, emigrated to the United States at age 13, later linking organized crime in the United States with its Sicilian roots, and was killed in Palermo in 1909.

The new holiday aims to promote the city’s historical, civil and moral heritage, emphasizing values of legality, justice, public service and civic courage, especially among young people. Padula already hosts the Casa Museo Joe Petrosino in his birthplace, and the initiative follows a proposal from the International Joe Petrosino Association, which has long worked to preserve his memory through cultural and educational activities.
