PAGASA utilizes satellite and radar data for typhoon forecasting and dam management
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) utilizes advanced technology and data monitoring to manage weather-related risks, including typhoons and dam operations. With approximately 20 tropical cyclones entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility annually, early forecasting is critical for community preparedness.
To track developing cyclones, PAGASA relies on data from the Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 geostationary weather satellites operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency. These satellites provide imagery as frequently as every 10 minutes, allowing meteorologists to monitor cloud systems and storm structures from space. As storms approach, the agency employs a network of Doppler weather radars to measure precipitation intensity and wind patterns.
This meteorological data is also vital for dam management. DOST-PAGASA monitors six major dams—Angat, Binga, Ambuklao, San Roque, Pantabangan, and Magat—to guide water level decisions. By transforming rainfall forecasts and rain-gauge readings into actionable information, authorities can coordinate the opening of dam gates to manage water levels and provide downstream communities with sufficient warning time to prepare for potential flooding.
