PAHO launches mental health study for medical professionals in the Americas

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is conducting a study through October 30, 2026, to assess the mental health, well-being, and working conditions of nursing and medical professionals. The research covers 17 countries across the Americas, including Brazil, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guyana, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay.

The study aims to identify the frequency of anxiety and depression symptoms, substance use indicators, and occupational factors affecting healthcare workers. It specifically examines the long-term impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and structural challenges such as staffing shortages, job insecurity, high turnover, and a lack of psychosocial protection.

Participants can complete an anonymous online questionnaire in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. The methodology is an adaptation of the WHO’s Mental Health of Nurses and Doctors (MeND) study used in Europe, allowing for regional comparisons to help inform future health policies and workplace improvements.
