Pahuatlán communities remain isolated after massive rockslide

A significant landslide involving approximately 160,000 cubic meters of rock and stone has cut off communication with the San Pablito and Xochimilco auxiliary communities in Pahuatlán, Mexico. The collapse occurred on October 21 at a site known as La Virgencita, triggered by a geological fault and recent rainfall.

Due to the instability of the terrain, the use of heavy machinery is currently prohibited to prevent further risks. Consequently, personnel from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), municipal workers, and local residents are working together to open a provisional alternative route in the Ahuacatitla area.

Authorities are also installing pipes to manage water flow safely and reduce the risk of further incidents. Officials estimate that the provisional path could be completed within three to four days, depending on ground conditions and safety requirements.
