Paipa water spring destroyed by railway works sparks community protest

Construction crews working on a railway line in Paipa, Colombia, carried out deep earth‑moving that completely destroyed a traditional water spring serving the San Miguel neighbourhood. The loss threatens the primary water supply for hundreds of vulnerable families, especially when the municipal aqueduct is interrupted.

Community leader Martín Eduardo Sierra reported the damage and said local committees observed altered underground water flow, sediment blockage and heavy ballast deposits. Residents have formally requested assistance from the municipal Agriculture Secretariat and Environmental Office, urging the construction consortium to restore the spring to its original condition.

The incident has raised environmental and public‑health concerns, prompting calls for stronger oversight and remediation measures.
