Paju City campaigns to relocate Korea Institute for Defense Analyses
Paju City has launched an intensive campaign to relocate the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA) to its jurisdiction. The push follows the inclusion of KIDA in the government’s metropolitan housing supply plan, which has raised the possibility of the institution moving from its current location in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul.
City officials argue that the relocation would serve as “special compensation for special sacrifices,” noting that Paju has endured decades of heavy regulations under the Military Bases and Installations Protection Act and the Seoul Metropolitan Area Readjustment Planning Act to support national security. Paju emphasizes that its proximity to the Military Demarcation Line offers a unique advantage, allowing for a direct link between defense policy research and actual security sites.
Mayor Son Bae-chan stated that the city aims to transform Paju into a new hub for national defense and security. The city is coordinating with local political figures, including National Assembly member Yoon Hu-deok, and plans to initiate resident signature campaigns to demonstrate public support.
