Paju City to launch 16.8 billion won wastewater reuse project

Paju City has announced the launch of a wastewater reuse project aimed at resolving recurring algae issues in Unjeong Lake Park and Sori Stream. The initiative, which begins administrative procedures next month, involves a total investment of 16.8 billion won.

The project focuses on stabilizing water supply to prevent stagnation and rising water temperatures, which are primary drivers of algae growth. Instead of simply discharging treated water from the Unjeong Sewage Treatment Plant into Sori Stream, the city will redirect it to a water circulation system for reprocessing. This treated water will then be continuously supplied to the lake and stream through a network of new and existing pipelines.

Key infrastructure developments include the construction of a new pump station at the Unjeong Sewage Treatment Plant and a 1.2km pressure pipeline. Following administrative reviews and design phases through 2027, construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, with completion expected by 2030. Once operational, the system is projected to provide over 34,000 cubic meters of water daily, even during dry seasons, to support the local aquatic ecosystem and improve water quality.
