Pakistan-administered Kashmir internet shutdown exceeds 100 days
Internet access in Pakistan-administered Kashmir has been severely restricted for over 100 days. Mobile data and broadband services have been suspended since June 5, following protests for electoral reform.
According to NetBlocks, the partial blackout has disrupted essential services, including online banking and business activities. The shutdown has also impacted the academic sector, leading the government to postpone entrance exams for students.
The unrest began in the lead-up to local elections and resulted in the banning of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), a group demanding changes to legislative seat allocations. Violent crackdowns on protests led to deadly clashes on July 27. Local estimates suggest the death toll has exceeded 50 people, including seven law enforcement officers.
