Pakistan pharmaceutical exports decline amid Afghan trade disruptions

Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports have experienced a significant downturn due to trade disruptions and border closures with Afghanistan. According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, pharmaceutical export value fell by 30.26 percent in fiscal year 2026, dropping from USD 457.456 million in FY25 to USD 319.012 million in FY26.

The decline continued into the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, with export earnings falling 25.53 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. Export volumes also saw a reduction of 26.14 percent, decreasing from 112,517 metric tonnes to 83,104 metric tonnes.

Afghanistan has historically been a primary market for Pakistani medicines. In FY25, Pakistan exported over USD 155 million in pharmaceuticals to Afghanistan, representing approximately 34 percent of its total pharmaceutical exports. Industry representatives, including former chairperson of the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association Tauqeer ul Haq, noted that the suspension of trade has caused substantial losses for both the pharmaceutical industry and the national exchequer, while also forcing Afghan patients to seek more expensive alternatives.
