Pakistan and Afghanistan escalate border tensions following airstrikes and clashes

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated following intense fighting and airstrikes along their shared border. Pakistan reported that its forces repelled an “attempted Afghan aggression” in the Gulistan sector of Balochistan province, claiming at least 13 Afghan Taliban personnel were killed during an overnight exchange of fire.

The escalation follows Pakistani airstrikes targeting 10 locations within Afghanistan, including provinces such as Kandahar, Paktia, and Khost. Islamabad stated these strikes were a response to a “deliberate and unlawful incursion into Pakistan by drones” on Wednesday, aiming to destroy terrorist hideouts and drone launch sites.

Both nations have issued conflicting accounts of the violence. While Pakistan accuses the Taliban of harboring militants who launch cross-border attacks, the Afghan government denies these claims, asserting that such issues are internal to Pakistan. The Afghan Defense Ministry has rejected reports of its personnel casualties, instead claiming its forces destroyed a Pakistani post near Spin Boldak. This surge in hostilities threatens ongoing mediation efforts by China, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye to stabilize relations between the two neighbors.
