Jaishankar advocates for multilateral reform at UNGA
On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conducted a series of high-level bilateral meetings to address global and regional challenges.
Jaishankar co-chaired the 'Partners for Multilateralism' summit, where he warned that the current global order is under significant stress due to geopolitical competition, strategic rivalry, and active conflicts. He advocated for 'reformed multilateralism' to ensure international institutions are more inclusive and transparent. He specifically highlighted the '4F crisis'—challenges involving fuel, food, fertilizer, and finance—and urged nations to diversify supply chains to mitigate risks from choke points.
During bilateral discussions, Jaishankar met with several leaders:
• France: Reviewed the Special Global Strategic Partnership, covering technology, defense, and clean energy. • Switzerland: Discussed economic ties following the implementation of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement. • Nauru: Reaffirmed India’s commitment as a development partner. • Ukraine and Moldova: Discussed regional stability and bilateral political and economic ties.
Additionally, Pakistan and France discussed bilateral relations and regional stability, emphasizing the Palestinian issue and the importance of maritime safety and energy supplies. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister expressed intentions to use the UNGA to advocate for Iranian interests amidst ongoing regional tensions.
