Pakistan and IMF conclude technical talks on economic review
Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have concluded technical negotiations regarding an economic review. The successful conclusion of these talks is expected to lead to a staff-level agreement, which will then be submitted to the IMF Executive Board for final approval.
If approved, the agreement could release approximately $1.2 billion in funding. This includes roughly $1 billion under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and $210 million under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).
The IMF has reportedly expressed appreciation for the performance of the State Bank of Pakistan and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in maintaining economic stability. However, discussions continue regarding the automotive sector. The IMF has requested the removal of concessional sales tax rates for electric vehicles (EVs), arguing that they are luxury items rather than necessities for low-income consumers. A new auto policy incorporating these considerations is being prepared for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
