Pakistan and Iran aim to expand energy ties and bilateral trade
Pakistan and Iran are working to deepen economic ties, targeting a $4 billion bilateral trade goal through expanded energy cooperation and infrastructure development. During meetings in Islamabad between Pakistan's Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari and Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghaddam, officials agreed to move forward with plans for a second cross-border electricity transmission line.
The expansion aims to increase the existing 100MW electricity supply arrangement to meet Pakistan's growing energy demands. A key focus of the cooperation is improving the reliability of electricity supply to the Gwadar Port region. While Pakistan is exploring domestic generation capacity within Gwadar, Iranian electricity is expected to remain a primary component of the regional energy strategy.
Beyond energy, the two nations discussed modernizing grid connectivity, enhancing technical cooperation, and routing a larger share of regional commerce through Pakistani ports to bolster long-term development and regional stability.
