Taliban accuses Pakistan of border attacks to evade Mecca Pact obligations

Tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan have escalated following recent military clashes and airstrikes along the border. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid accused Pakistan of launching attacks on Afghan provinces, including Kandahar, Paktia, and Khost, to distract its domestic population from severe economic deterioration and political unrest.

Mujahid further alleged that Pakistan is attempting to evade its obligations under the Mecca Pact, a defense agreement signed on August 7 by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey. The pact stipulates that an armed attack against one signatory is considered an attack against all three. The Taliban claims Pakistan is using the conflict to portray itself as being in a state of war to bypass these collective security responsibilities.

In a separate recent incident, Pakistani security sources reported that Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts in the Kurram sector. Pakistani forces responded with heavy weaponry, including mortars and artillery, targeting Afghan defensive positions. These clashes follow reports of unprovoked firing and alleged cross-border infiltration attempts.
