Pakistan approves 75 billion rupee petrol relief package amid dealer opposition

Pakistan's Economic Coordination Committee has approved a 75 billion rupee petroleum relief package aimed at providing subsidies to approximately 11 million vehicle owners. Under the plan, two- and three-wheeled vehicle owners can receive relief on up to 20 liters of fuel monthly, while owners of cars with engines up to 800cc are eligible for relief on up to 30 liters per month. Petroleum Minister Pervaiz Malik stated the proposal was developed following directives from the Prime Minister.

However, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) has rejected the implementation of the package. The association, representing roughly 14,000 dealers nationwide, held an emergency press conference stating they cannot sell petrol at the reduced rates without a clear mechanism for reimbursement. PPDA Chairman Malik Khuda Bakhsh warned that if the government attempts to force the relief package without consultation or guaranteed compensation, petrol pumps will be shut down. The dealers are demanding immediate negotiations to ensure they are not forced to provide fuel on credit.
