Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir addresses security and provincial autonomy

Pakistan Army Chief and Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir has vowed to aggressively target terrorists, whom the military describes as being backed by India. During a visit to Corps Headquarters in Peshawar, Munir emphasized the military's commitment to countering threats and maintaining operational readiness. The military's media wing, ISPR, reported that ten terrorists were killed during security operations in Balochistan’s Gwadar district following attempts to disrupt local development.

Simultaneously, Munir’s leadership is facing scrutiny regarding the centralization of power. Reports indicate that recent emergency measures approved by President Asif Ali Zardari have suspended the provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. While Islamabad cited the need to combat militancy as the justification, critics argue the move targets the political base of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and undermines provincial autonomy. Concerns have also been raised regarding proposals to create new provinces, which some suggest could further weaken the federation's autonomous political centers.
