Pakistan-Afghanistan border clashes erupt in Kurram sector

Pakistani security forces and the Afghan Taliban engaged in heavy armed clashes along the northwestern border in the Kurram-Paktia sector on October 17, 2026. The fighting, which involved artillery and heavy weaponry, occurred in areas including Upper Kurram, Ghuzgarhi, and the Taldah sector.

Pakistani military sources reported that the Afghan Taliban opened fire to facilitate the infiltration of militants into Pakistan. In response, the Pakistan Army targeted the Topsar border post and the Shipola base camp, the latter of which was reportedly destroyed. Security officials stated that several Afghan Taliban personnel were killed during the retaliatory strikes, and some Taliban forces abandoned their positions.

Additionally, Pakistani troops reportedly killed an unspecified number of Pakistani Taliban (TTP) militants attempting to cross from eastern Afghanistan. Amidst the intense fighting, local reports indicated that a missile struck a residential area in Pewar, Upper Kurram, though civilian casualties have not been independently confirmed.

The clashes occur against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Islamabad and Kabul. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban government of providing sanctuary to militant groups like the TTP, an allegation that Kabul continues to deny.
