Pakistan crackdown in Kashmir threatens EU trade status

Security forces in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have engaged in a lethal crackdown against protesters demanding democratic and social rights. Reports indicate that at least 90 people have been killed by Pakistani security forces since early June, with significant casualties occurring in Rawalakot during late July.

The protests, largely organized by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), have been met with repressive measures including communication blackouts, internet restrictions, and the use of anti-terrorism apparatus against activists. Authorities have also been accused of restricting access to food and medical supplies.

These human rights developments pose a risk to Pakistan’s economic standing with the European Union. Under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) system, Pakistan enjoys zero import duties on a vast majority of its exports to Europe. However, maintaining this status requires the effective implementation of international conventions regarding civil rights, freedom of expression, and judicial guarantees.
