Pakistan Cricket Board weighs moving PSL to January window

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and owners of the eight Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises are discussing a proposal to move the 2027 tournament to a January-February window. The suggestion was brought forward by media rights holder Walee Technologies during a PSL Governing Council meeting in London.

Walee Technologies argues that the current April-May slot results in lower advertising revenue, as many companies exhaust their marketing budgets during Ramadan. However, franchise owners have expressed concerns regarding broadcast revenue shares and potential player availability issues. A January window would see the PSL compete with South Africa’s SA20 and Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) for overseas talent.

Logistical challenges were also noted, specifically regarding cold weather and dense fog in Punjab venues like Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. To mitigate these, one proposal suggests starting the tournament in Karachi. Additionally, the PCB is considering the introduction of a mid-year tournament and expanding into the esports sector to boost engagement and revenue.
