Pakistan's OGRA hikes RLNG, LPG prices and outlines regulatory reforms
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) raised re‑gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) prices by up to 34.6% for July 2026, and by 32% for August 2026, setting rates at about $25 per MMBtu – the steepest increase in a decade. The surge follows a supply crunch after Qatar halted LNG shipments, forcing Pakistan to buy spot‑market cargoes.
LPG prices were also increased, with the consumer rate rising by Rs 12.89 per kilogram, pushing the cost of a standard 11.8 kg household cylinder above Rs 3,000 for August. In contrast, OGRA reduced petrol by Rs 0.12 per litre to Rs 336.03 and diesel by Rs 0.66 per litre to Rs 392.38, rates that will stay in effect until 3 August.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high‑level meeting on OGRA reforms, directing the rollout of digital monitoring tools such as a national dashboard, tanker track‑and‑trace, depot telemetry, a mobile route‑monitoring app and digital sales entry at pumps. He ordered the appointment of private‑sector experts and a merit‑based process for OGRA appointments, emphasizing transparency and the prevention of profiteering.
These measures aim to strengthen oversight of Pakistan’s fuel supply chain, curb hoarding, and stabilize energy prices amid ongoing inflationary pressures.
