Pakistan digital creators face payment and taxation challenges
Content creators in Pakistan are navigating significant hurdles regarding international payouts and new domestic tax regulations. While platforms like X (formerly Twitter) offer revenue sharing and subscription models, creators face friction due to the lack of direct support from payment processors like Stripe Connect in the region.
To qualify for X’s revenue sharing, users must have at least 500 followers, five million organic impressions over three months, and an active X Premium subscription. However, the reliance on Stripe for payouts creates obstacles for Pakistani users compared to those in the US or UK.
Simultaneously, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a new mechanism to tax income from social media platforms like YouTube. The FBR is using a benchmark of Rs195 ($0.71) per 1,000 views to bring the digital economy into the formal tax system. This move has caused confusion among creators, who express concern that the earnings formula and limits on deductible expenses could increase their tax burden and stifle the growth of the country’s developing digital content industry.
