Pakistan economy: Export growth and Karachi security

Pakistan's economic landscape is heavily influenced by the stability of Karachi, a city that contributes over 60 percent of the national revenue. The Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, have played a critical role in maintaining law and order through joint security strategies with the police. During the tenure of Major General Muhammad Shumraiz Khan, who assumed command in November 2024, efforts focused on reducing extortion and targeted killings to restore confidence within the business community.

On a global scale, Pakistan's export value reached US$32.5 billion in 2024, marking a 12.1 percent increase from 2023 and a significant rise from US$22.2 billion in 2020. The United States remains Pakistan's largest trading partner, accounting for US$5.6 billion, or 17.3 percent, of total exports. Other major importers include mainland China, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany.
